4 generations of professional women – Are you ready for Gen Y

By: admin on Mon 25 Feb 2008 3:17 PM under Business, Entrepreneurship, Globalization, women

Women have been playing a significant tole in business as employees and owners over the last 3 decades.

In the 60s and 70s, I feel that they took the responsibility to have a better life for themselves and their families and entered the workforce. With this they realized that they needed to connect with both men and women in the workforce. And so we observed the advent of professional networks.

In the 80s, they realized the need of sponsors, mentors and advisors so they could learn and prepare for C-level positions.

In the 90s, the internet changed the dynamics of the marketplace significantly. She found herself applying for jobs and making offers online. Virtual teams and global competition demanded her to build trust to work effectively with vendors, customers and employers.

Now, Gen Y is redefining work. They are looking to build powerful social networks and identities. They look for meaning in their work.

So, you may ask, what is the objective of all this?

I believe we have set the fundamental foundation to redefine work. We are now embarking on an era to exploit opportunities, adopt new technologies, focus on our careers like never before. We have invited change and this transformation presents another opportunity to re-invent meaning of work.
