Build them before you need them
The time to start networking is NOT the day you need a new job. That’s a year or more too late. You need to have the relationships built and strong before you need to tap into them.
See relationship building as an investment, but not as one with specific expectations or payoffs. Don’t go into networking thinking about how you will ask people for favors later. Relationships – real relationships – are build on mutual trust, respect, and an interest in each other. If you go through the motions with a payoff in mind, it will be transparent and unwelcome.
