Lessons from Garage Cleaning
Yesterday, I spent part of my day cleaning my garage. This has been an impending task for a long time and I was excited I was able to accomplish more than what I set out to do.
At the end, I wondered why I was able to do more than what I had planned. What if I could apply this to my work, life and whatever I care about.
And as I thought about it, here is what showed up for me:
1. Tools to organize: You might have a good intention to be organized. But that is not enough. You need to have tools to organize. When I removed the books from my boxes, I needed a cabinet to place them into. Similarly, for our work, we need to have relevant tools for all tasks to accomplish our goals.
2. Get Good help: There are things you are good at and there are things you are NOT good at. You need to know this and get the right help. I am not good at picking up heavy boxes so got help for doing that. Imagine! how we could leverage this if we are aware of things that are beyond our competency…like accounting, gardening, dry-cleaning etc. (if these are tasks that don’t match your skill set)
3. Remove clutter for improved efficiency: After the clutter was removed from the garage, I was able to find things on which I saved me money, time and energy to get them again. All the stuff in the boxes that was not useful was dumped which created more room. All in all this increased efficiency. Efficiency is to remove the over heads and create leverage from what is available.
