Tale of a Combat PILOT
I was just speaking to my friend who was in military and now works in the defense industry. He was telling me that when he was in the Navy, many women wanted to enroll to become combat pilots. They hesitated since military is such a BOYS CLUB. And then they brought in women and trained them to become combat pilots. And then something happened, after serving for 5-10 years, these women wanted to take time off to have a baby. And the people who had resisted women in the navy said – WE TOLD YOU.
The navy had spent millions of dollars on training these women and it was unacceptable to let them GO.
The thing that baffled me is that how we miss BIOLOGY when we find ourselves in these conversations. I have no problem if our biology was such that men would share the task of having babies with us. This is not the question of incompetency ….it is a question if we can defy nature.
I salute these women who pursued their passion of becoming a combat pilot and then had the guts to take care of something like having a family. After all, we make the same sacrifices to make a career – men and women – in this world nothing comes easy – then why question the commitment to a career? Why this fixed thinking of how things should be?
It is just the fact that women have babies – and that is just the BIOLOGY. Accept it and don’t suffer with it. And bring forth career paths for women that were never pursued by them – a NEW BEGINNING
