To defeat a stereotype, dress contrary to it
Before you show up, ask yourself the day before, ” What do they know about me?”.
“What impressions have they already formed from what little they already know?”
Then think, “Does my appearance reinforce their stereotype?”
If so, then dress yourself to undermine the stereotype. A college student in well-tailored suit, a U.S. President in Khakis, a school teacher with a tattoo; these are some examples of ways to attack a stereotype.
Many professionals benefited from Casual Fridays, and the spread of them throughout their workweek, is that many new clients began to perceive these professionals as more relaxed and accessible.
So, don’t give into a stereotype – package against a stereotype.
